YOUNG PEOPLE & FAMILIES
At Keystone Psychology, we want to help young people to get back on track to live a healthy, happy life.
Some of the young people we work with have experienced trauma, and need therapeutic support to work through this. Other young people we see may or may not have experienced trauma or other negative life events, but are engaging in behaviours that are putting themselves or others at risk. If any of this sounds familiar, call us.
Sometimes parents are unsure, worried or embarrassed about their child's behaviour and don't know who to call. For example you may be worried that a child has touched or may touch another child inappropriately. You may have concerns about what they're up to online, or that they are behaving in ways that are disrespectful or harmful.
It may be that you want them to get a better understanding about healthy sexuality and relationships. Or these concerns may relate to you and you may be worried about your own thoughts and behaviour.
Many parents are unsure what to do, or how to react, when their child has engaged in harmful sexual behaviour. Many feel scared about the possible social, emotional and legal consequences for their child. Feeling ashamed, shocked and confused are common reactions. These feelings are amplified when it is something that has happened within the context of the family environment such as between siblings or cousins. Give us a call and we can discuss all the options with you, and help you navigate through this emotional rollercoaster.
Research shows us that seeking help by way of counselling (also referred to as rehabilitation or treatment) that is delivered in a meaningful way by practitioners experienced in this area can be highly effective in ensuring the behaviours do not persist and in helping the young person to make positive, healthy lifestyle choices.
We can work with the young person individually in a safe, non-judgemental and engaging way to help them to develop healthy interests and behaviours. We might also recommend some sessions with parents and families in these instances, and would discuss this with you from the outset.
It may be that as a parent, you are looking for help in improving your parenting capacity, or seeking to understand how to better meet the needs of your child. You might seek this support voluntarily, or perhaps this is a requirement that is being asked of you by Court or Child Protection. Get in touch with us to discuss.
Therapy sessions and assessments are conducted in a clinic-based setting, via telehealth or in some instances by way of outreach appointments.
